- Despite his
- nickname, "Babe"
- Ruth was a big
- man, six feet two
- inches tall and
- stocky. He had a
- troubled child-
- hood, often in
- trouble with the
- police. But his
- talent was
- spotted at school,
- and he secured
- his first contract
- with the local
- Baltimore team
- in 1914
- #
- Initially a pitcher,
- the left-handed
- Ruth hit more
- home runs in
- a season (60)
- and in a career
- (714) than
- anyone else. In
- 1922 Ruth was
- paid more than
- the US president,
- then (if not now)
- a remarkable
- achievement
- for a sportsman
- #
- Ruth was a hero
- on and off the
- field. He once
- promised a sick
- child that he
- would hit a home
- run if the boy
- would recover
- from his spinal
- infection. He kept
- his side of the
- bargain; so did
- the boy, who
- years later
- visited Ruth
- when he was ill
- in hospital
- #
- Ruth died from
- throat cancer in
- 1948 at the age
- of 53. Americans
- had been gladdened
- by his triumphs,
- and saddened by
- his personal
- tragedies: he had
- lost both his
- children in
- infancy and his
- first wife died in
- a fire. More than
- 100,000 people
- stood in line to
- see his coffin
- #
- Ruth hardly lived
- like an athlete,
- gambling wildly,
- drinking deeply
- and feeding a
- prodigious
- appetite; and he
- certainly didn't
- look like one.
- But he was a
- ferocious hitter
- and a real
- sporting hero.
- Today's sportsmen
- do not measure up
